DIAA Offers Free November Workshops

For the first time ever, the Deer Isle Artist Association is offering free workshops to the public. Five workshops on making and promoting art will be held throughout November. DIAA members will offer practical advice on drawing, coiling, photo-editing and promoting art on social media. It isn’t necessary to be a member to participate. All but one of the sessions will be held at the Deer Isle Art Association Gallery at 15 Main St., Deer Isle.

Colored Pencil Workshop With Judith Felch

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, 10 am-12:30 pm, DIAA Gallery

Learn drawing techniques using colored pencils, including how to achieve variation of value and rich depth of color. Students will practice those methods.

If you’ve ever wanted to try out colored pencils, this workshop is for you. Any level of student is welcome. Materials: Prismacolor pencils (minimum set of 24 pencils; a limited number of pencil sets will be available for use); any sketchbook (80lb paper or heavier); one graphite pencil; eraser (your preference, kneaded, pink pearl, other).

Photo Editing/Printing Workshop With David Simonds 

Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, 9 am-Noon, 19 Eider Pl., Sedgwick

Learn to edit digital photos through Photoshop and Lightroom. We’ll cover basic adjustments of color, tone and content through the final print.

Photo editing can fully realize the potential of a digital capture. We’ll show how to use both programs, taking one of your images through the workflow to the final print. No prior experience is necessary. Bring a digital image on a thumb drive, preferably captured in RAW or TIFF. Jpgs will do.

Coiling Baskets With Cindy Bourque-Simonds

Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, 1 pm-4 pm, DIAA Gallery

Learn a simple coil and create small baskets/vessels using colored waxed linen thread and a tapestry needle.

Coiling is a very old stitch which is done in a variety of ways.  We will also explore embellishments to our baskets, such as papering, painting, shaping and adding elements. All levels are welcome and materials are provided. Please email your interest to cbsimonds@gmail.com.

Sharing Your Art on Social Media With Leslie Landrigan

Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, 10 am-Noon, DIAA Gallery

Learn how to gain exposure for your art using Facebook and Instagram. We’ll cover details of how to photograph, edit and post images on those platforms.

Learn how Facebook and Instagram work, and how and why to use them. We’ll show how to photograph art, to use hashtags, to write compelling captions and to gain followers. Participants should bring smart phones, laptops and a piece of work.

Sketching in Perspective Workshop With Hub White                   

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, 10 am-Noon, DIAA Gallery

This workshop will focus upon drawing “believable”  free hand, not constructed, sketches in perspective.  Building forms and their immediate settings will be the dominant subject matter used to learn a technique that can be applied to other subjects as well.   The media to be provided will be graphite pencil and paper.
